Humble Beginnings

I admit it, one of the funnest things to do is google yourself.  Everyone does it!  Well known news anchor even google themselves, so I am not alone and I don't feel bad about it.  My mom googled herself once and found out she was anonymously named a " cougar" of our hometown.  She talked about it a lot after that.

Well the other day I indulged and googled my name.   The first couple of suggestions are the obvious ones, the link to my station's webpage and my facebook page.  But as you go deeper into the 5th O on GOOGLE at the bottom page, things get old school.  I found one of my first forecasts I did in college.  I clicked and instantly started laughing at myself.  I had little to no make up on.  I thought I could get by with my "natural beauty".  Big mistake, should have started caking it on then.  The jeans and turtle neck were appropriate for the 30 degree weather in State College but not appropriate for television.  And I may have run a brush through my hair earlier that morning.

But what surprised me is my calm composure through the broadcast.  Although the forecast put me to sleep, I liked my word choice and pace.  I thought, not bad young Monica.  But then I remembered what it took to finish this 1:30 broadcast, HOURS!  I used to stand in front of the green wall and every time I slipped up, I started again.  Every time, I didn't like my word choice or I stepped the wrong way, RE-DO! It made for a good end product but I hurt myself in the end.  Live television was hard for me to handle and I started behind the curve.  It wasn't until I was forced to do live television, where there was no such thing as re-dos or practice, that I finally got a hold of forecasting.  Looking back, I wish I would have not allowed myself the re-dos and just gone with it.  People would have seen me and not the practiced me.  I am more fun running on adrenaline and rolling with the punches. Its how I work best and its how live television works.
